A charming and highly functional 19th-century French provincial bureau à gradin (stepped-back clerk's desk), showing exceptional character and utilitarian design. Crafted from a combination of solid walnut and pine, this two-part desk features a prominent upper hutch over a wide, deep writing base supported by tall, elegant ring-turned legs typical of the period.The upper cabinet opens via two flush-mounted paneled doors to reveal a highly organized interior workspace. The central cavity features an open display shelf flanked by decorative carved scalloped corbels. To either side are vertical document sorting compartments fitted with classic serpentine, or "wavy-edged," wooden dividers designed to hold ledger books and folios. Two wide, shallow drawers sit beneath the compartments, fitted with dark, antique drop-pendant metal pulls. The desk exhibits an attractive, warm golden-brown patina throughout.
