Description
size: 5.5 weight: 5.42 grams material: platinum gemstones: natural tanzanite: 1.00ct natural diamonds: VS-SI, 0.12ctw, G-H color Notes from the Curator This platinum ring carries a one-carat oval tanzanite flanked by white diamonds—a pairing that speaks to the cool neutrality of platinum's own character. Tanzanite, unearthed in 1967 in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro, was brought to global attention by Tiffany & Co. the following year and named for its single-source geography. The stone is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation; this optical phenomenon arises from the unique arrangement of vanadium ions within its crystal structure, causing different wavelengths of light to be absorbed depending on the orientation of the light and the crystal axes. Platinum is one of the most durable wedding ring metals and platinum's color is extremely complementary to tanzanite gemstones, drawing out the stone's saturated violet-blue. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association chose tanzanite as a December birthstone, the first change to their birthstone list since 1912.
