Tanzanite is trichroic, displaying blue, violet, and burgundy hues depending on crystal orientation, and its color comes from trace amounts of vanadium in the zoisite crystal structure. Tiffany & Co. named this variety of zoisite "tanzanite" and launched it with a major campaign in 1968, a year after its discovery. Cushion cuts are among the most common shapes for tanzanite, and cutters orient the facets to emphasize either the blue or violet face-up color. Tanzanite is found only in the Simanjiro District of Tanzania's Manyara Region, in a mining area roughly seven kilometres long and two wide near the Mererani Hills, making this the sole source on earth for gem-quality material of this color.
