Notes from the Curator First issued in 1957, the Brides de Gala composition was born when Robert Dumas placed two ceremonial bridles face to face on the floor of Émile Hermès' former office, and the designer Hugo Grygkar, working in close collaboration with Dumas, drew on the latter's private collection for this particular pair of harnesses. One of the bridles, adorned with mermaids, came from Émile-Maurice Hermès' collection and had been made for the Mexican Emperor Maximilian I—an artifact not merely equestrian but ceremonial, intended to mark state occasions with the same splendor Hermès silk would later confer upon the wearer.
